How to Land Your First Season on a Cattle Station in Australia
A practical guide to securing your spot on an Aussie cattle station.
Cattle station work is one of the most authentic and toughest rural experiences in the world. Months out bush, mustering large mobs across remote properties, fixing what breaks, learning to ride and rope. Here's how it actually works.
Thinking about working on a cattle station in Australia? It’s a unique experience that combines hard work with the stunning beauty of the outback. This guide will walk you through what stations are looking for, the seasonal work available, and how to make your application stand out. From mustering cattle to maintaining equipment, life on a cattle station is demanding but rewarding. Whether you're a seasoned worker or a first-timer, understanding the ins and outs of the industry will help you secure that coveted spot for your first season.
What stations want
Reliable, low-ego, low-drama. Driver's licence (manual a plus), basic mechanical sense, willingness to live remote. Riding experience helps but isn't always required for ringers.
The season
The northern muster runs roughly April to October. Wet season (Nov–Mar) is quieter — stations skeleton-staff. Apply Jan–Mar for the upcoming muster.
Where the work is
Northern Territory (Barkly, Top End), Kimberley WA, Channel Country QLD, far north SA. Larger pastoral company stations (AAco, NAPCo, S. Kidman) hire in waves; family stations hire one-by-one.
What you'll earn
Live-in roles include food + accommodation, plus a wage. Junior ringer / jillaroo wages start modest but you're spending almost nothing for months. Senior stockmen and head stockmen earn well.
How to apply
Cold-call. Direct emails with a short CV, your tickets, and your dates beat generic job-board applications. Specify wet- or dry-season availability.
Visas
Aussies and PR-holders apply direct. Backpackers on a Working Holiday Visa can use station work as 88-day specified work to extend visas — confirm the property is eligible.
REALM's view
A station season changes people. Most who do it once go back. We curate live station and ringer roles weekly and link direct to the property — we never republish their descriptions.
